THE CHALLENGE
J.D. Edwards has achieved a broad install base in the consumer packaged goods (CPG), industrial manufacturing and wholesale distribution industries because it fulfills so many of their most important criteria—such as best-of-breed supply chain management and customer relationship management. But some of our clients required more depth of functionality with the J.D. Edwards 5 manufacturing and distribution software modules, to track goods with more than one unit of measure. For example: 0.25 kg packages of bacon are put into a box that has 20 packages. Each box has a total weight of 5 kg. Ten boxes are put onto a skid, total weight 50 kg. J.D. Edwards 5 handles one unit of measure, the primary unit. So it would only store information at the skid level and would not track the weight of each individual box or package. This presented a problem when skids and boxes were broken down in distribution to fulfill the needs of our clients' lower-volume customers.

THE EXETER SOLUTION
Exeter Catch Weight is a custom-built bolt-on to J.D. Edwards 5 that handles the primary unit of measure as well as a secondary and even a third unit. The bolt-on keeps track of inventory at the skid level, the box level and even the package level, depending on business requirements.
